Dot Day Class Collaboration
Draw and Paint Project
What is International Dot Day? Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot, International Dot Day celebrates creativity, courage and collaboration on September 15th.
Celebrate International Dot Day with this collaborative class project! Students can exercise their drawing and painting skills to create their own ‘dot’ as part of a larger artwork by the whole class. Developed by Cassie Stephens.

Step One
Using the Bingo dauber, make a dot at the top, bottom, right, and left sides of the Mixed Media Circle. The dots should be evenly spaced, like the directions on a compass.
Step Two
Draw two lines. Each line should go from one dot to another. Feel free to incorporate loops, angles, and curves in your lines.
Step Three
The two lines have created a series of organic shapes on the paper. Use the oil pastels, create patterns of lines, dots, or other designs within each shape.
Step Four
Using the watercolors, paint over the oil pastel patterns, filling in each shape with color.
Step Five
When everyone in the class has completed their circle and the paint has dried, it’s time to connect the circles.
Step Six
Glue small strips of construction paper to the back of a circle at each point where each of the main lines (step 2) meet the edge of the paper. The construction paper strips should stick out from the edge.
Step Seven
Glue other circles to each construction paper strip, making sure the main lines connect.
Step Eight
Repeat steps 6 and 7 to connect all the circles together, creating the final artwork.
