Dot Day Radiating Dots Circles
Celebrate Dot Day with this multi-media radiating pattern project.
In this lesson, students will create a design that radiates from the center dot. For inspiration for this lesson, students may be introduced to the rose windows in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in France. The beautiful shapes of stained glass radiate from the center of the window.
Teacher Tip: When tracing circles for this lesson, have students use clear lids. This way they can see the center of their circle when tracing. Begin collecting those lids now!

Step One
After introducing The Dot to students, discuss how they are going to create a radiating dot. Begin by folding the paper in half then in quarters and then in eighths.
Step Two
Using an oil pastel, have students open their paper and trace over the four lines in the paper. They now have a circle with eight sections.
Step Three
With clear lids, have students draw three concentric circles in oil pastel.
Step Four
Place a sticker dot in the center of the circle.
Step Five
Starting in the center of the circle, have students draw the same design in each section.
Step Six
As students move outward on their drawing, they should create a new design that repeats around the center.
Step Seven
Once the radiating design is complete, it’s now time to paint!
Step Eight
Using watercolor paint, students can add color to their designs. The oil pastel will resist the watercolor which means their designs will show through the paint.
Teacher Tip: If students have difficulty repeating their design, they can simply draw it on half of their circle. Then they can fold their paper closed and trace over their designs with a pencil on the back of their paper. When their paper is opened, the design will have transferred to the other side of the circle!
