Let’s Draw Gingerbread Houses

Draw and Paint Project

Celebrate the holidays by creating these sweet keepsakes with this gingerbread house themed project. Students can practice their drawing and painting skills with watercolor pencils.

Dixon Ticonderoga Materials:

  • Prang® Watercolor Pencils, 10 count, X23650
  • Prang® Watercolor Paper Pad, White, 9x12", 30 sheets, P2367-0001
  • Prang® Hobby Paint Brush Set, Assorted Sizes, 4 brushes, X94006
  • Prang® Stable Water Pots, set of 6, X94010

Other Materials:

  • Permanent marker
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Chenille stems (pipe cleaners)

Step One

Start by folding the paper into four equal quadrants.

Using a permanent marker and the included template as a guide, draw a different gingerbread house in each quadrant. Start with the basic outline of the house then add plenty of festive details.

Using the watercolor pencils, apply color around the outside of each shape and/or along each permanent marker line. Don’t forget to add color to the background lines as well.

Using a paintbrush and water, spread the color from the watercolor pencils, filling in the white spaces.

Step Five

Cut the four paper quadrants apart.

Using the permanent marker, watercolor pencils, and water, add decorative patterns to wooden craft sticks. These will create frames for your gingerbread house. Each frame will need four sticks, for a total of 16.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the craft sticks to the outside of each gingerbread house picture.

Using the chenille stems, create a loop and hot glue it to the back a gingerbread picture. This will allow you to hang the picture. Repeat with the remaining pictures.

ALTERNATE: Create one large gingerbread picture, following steps 2 - 4. Leave space around the edge to draw a picture frame on he paper itself.
