Modeling Clay for Beginners

Learn the basics of sculpting in three simple techniques with this modeling clay project.

Students can practice creating basic shapes with modeling clay by using these three simple techniques. From there, students can use those same techniques to produce more complex and creative designs.

Step One

Divide modeling clay in to pieces just large enough to fit comfortably in your students’ hands.

Instruct students to roll the modeling clay between their hands in a circular motion to create a sphere.

Instruct students to roll the modeling clay back and forth between their hands to create a coil.

Instruct students to form a “duck bill” with their fingers and thumb and use it to flatten the modeling clay, creating a slab.
